A weekend in Cádiz

Hello all! As you may or may not remember (I might not have mentioned it), my friend and I have booked 3 weekend trips away in quick succession.  Rather than one long rambling blog about three different trips, I have decided to split them into three instalments.  Easier for my brain and hopefully more interesting for you too.

Trip number 1: Cádiz, a city surrounded by the sea in South-western Spain.  It’s been the furthest place so far to visit, with a 4.5 hour bla bla car journey being the quickest and cheapest option.  In true traveller style, we left El Ejido on the Friday afternoon in a bla bla car without a return journey planned, filled with optimism that something would come up and if not then “oh well, we’ll stay another day!”. It was another pleasant journey, only disturbed by my moment of sheer panic when I realised I´d left my phone in the petrol station´s toilet.  Luckily, it was a quiet service station and we were soon back on the road again phone and all.  Our helpful bla bla driver dropped us off at the port, where we caught a boat to Cádiz.  It definitely beat getting the train and made the journey more interesting.  We arrived at 8.15pm, slightly frozen – we had to sit up on the deck!

Saturday was our main exploring day, we walked around Cádiz’s many interlinking streets getting lost and discovering new places once we’d thought we’d seen them all.  My favourite part of the day was the coastal walk around Cádiz, there is a brilliant view of the Cathedral and you can walk out to San Sebastian castle.  Luckily, it wasn’t windy when we did it otherwise we would have got soaked by the waves on either side.  We couldn’t go to Cádiz and not try its famous dish: Tortillitas de Camarones (fritter with shrimps in).  It had received a lot of hype from work colleagues here in El Ejido, but for me it didn’t quite hit the spot.  I enjoyed them and am glad we tried them but I don’t think I’d go running back for more.

We were tour guides for the day on Sunday as Emma’s university friend visited popped over for a quick visit.  We had a churros and chocolate breakfast sitting in the sun whilst watching crowds gather for another mini carnival; all the guys were in costume and had really made the effort.  I could take a page out of their book when it comes to dress up!  There was one place left on our list to tick off before leaving Cádiz, the Torre Tavira and its camera obscura.  There were great panoramic views of Cádiz from the top of the tower and its camera obscura inside was a laugh.  If you’re on the streets in Cádiz or on your rooftop you never know who might be watching you!  Later that evening, we met up with my uni friend (she’s studying in Cádiz) for pizza and a catch-up.  It was really nice to see her and here what she’s been up to.  By this point, I think you should know that we had found a journey home.  We got a bla bla car at 9am on Monday to Malaga and then another one onwards to El Ejido – a piece of cake 😉
